Chase Center Welcomes Mark Bauerlein as Visiting Professor

The Chase Center has welcomed a new visiting professor to the ranks of its faculty for the Spring 2026 semester.

Dr. Mark Bauerlein is Contributing Editor at First Things, trustee at New College of Florida, and Professor Emeritus of English at Emory University, where he taught after earning his PhD in English at UCLA in 1988. 

During his time at The Ohio State University, Bauerlein will be adding value to the Chase Center’s mission in numerous ways.

“The Chase Center is fortunate to be welcoming a visiting faculty member of Dr. Bauerlein’s knowledge and experience to our growing academic community,” said Chase Center Executive Director Lee Strang. “In addition to helping us launch our K-12 and classical school outreach, Mark will share his insights on our classical and great books degree development, and he will build our academic journal and book series.”

For two years, Bauerlein served as Director of the Office of Research and Analysis at the National Endowment for the Arts. His books include Whitman and the American Idiom, Literary Criticism: An Autopsy, The Pragmatic Mind: Explorations in the Psychology of Belief, The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future, and The Dumbest Generation Grows Up: From Stupefied Youth to Dangerous Adults

His commentaries and reviews have appeared in PMLA, Philosophy and Literature, Yale Review, Chronicle of Higher Education, TLS, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Weekly Standard, Boston Globe, New York Post, and other national periodicals. He has appeared on CNN, BBC World Today, Fox and Friends, ABC's 20/20, Nightline, PBS Frontline, CBS News, All Things Considered, and other national venues.

Bauerlein’s areas of expertise include American literature, Pragmatism, literary theory, and youth and technology.
