Civics Bee contestants

Congratulations to the winners, finalists, and contestants from the May 13 regional competition for the National Civics Bee, hosted by the Salmon P. Chase Center with support from the Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce.

Twelve amazing middle schoolers from as close as Columbus and as far away as Cleveland competed for cash awards and the opportunity to advance to the state competition later this year!

Congratulations to first-place winner Missy S., an eighth grader from the Columbus Academy; second-place contestant Kusk K., an eighth grader from Jackson Memorial Middle School in Stark County; and third-place contestant Sabeeh Q., a seventh grader also from Jackson Memorial Middle School in Stark County. These winners took home cash prizes and trophies.

These students -- along with sixth graders Kamryn D. from Edgewood Middle School in Wayne County and Amaya R. from George G. Dodge Middle School in Summit County -- will advance to the state competition, with a chance to proceed to Nationals in Washington, D.C.

To be selected for the competition, these students submitted essays on a variety of civics-related topics. Last night, they participated in two very tough rounds of multiple choice questions on civics topics, with the top five students progressing to the third and final round. There, they had to present a three-sentence summary of their essay to the judges and then answer questions about their topic from each judge.

Thank you to the Hilliard Chamber of Commerce for helping us present this event!
