Photo portrait of Jesse Smith

Prior to joining the Chase Center, Smith was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Benedictine College. He is interested in the intersections between religion, family, and politics in the United States.

Smith obtained his PhD in Sociology and Demography from the Pennsylvania State University in 2023, following a former career as a child and family social worker in central Indiana.

Smith’s work has appeared in journals such as Journal of Marriage and Family, Sociology of Religion, and Socius, as well as popular outlets such as The Public Discourse and Law & Liberty. He has published research on topics such as the heterogeneity of religious nationalism, moral socialization of young adults, and transmission of religious belief and practice between generations. His current focus is on the ways that dominant paradigms in academic research lead to systematic errors and blind spots in bodies of social scientific knowledge.
