The Salmon P. Chase Center Welcomes Inaugural Faculty Cohort

Columbus, Ohio -  The Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society at The Ohio State University is proud to announce the appointment of its inaugural faculty cohort. These distinguished scholars bring a wide range of expertise and disciplinary backgrounds to the Chase Center and are united by a shared commitment to citizenship education and the pursuit of truth through rigorous intellectual inquiry.

“Our founding faculty are the heart of our growing academic community and dedicated to educating the next generation of American citizens,” said Executive Director Lee Strang. Their scholarship and teaching are foundational to the Chase Center.

Michael Clune

The new faculty represent fields including law, history, political theory, literature, economics, sociology and civic education. Their research spans topics from the Fourteenth Amendment and Civil War politics to religious toleration, international relations, and the foundations of democratic society.

Among the new appointments is Michael Clune, a renowned literature scholar, author and critic whose work has appeared in Harper’sThe Atlantic, and major academic presses. His latest book, Pan, was recently released and received critical acclaim. The Chase Center is honored to welcome Professor Clune and all its faculty, each of whom contribute to the Chase Center’s multi-disciplinary mission.

Established by the State of Ohio in 2023, the Salmon P. Chase Center is dedicated to teaching and researching the historical ideas, traditions, and texts that have shaped the American constitutional order and society. The Chase Center affirms the value of intellectual diversity, civil discourse, and the cultivation of responsible leadership and informed citizenship.
